My name is Henry Sowerby and I am from Hyde Park, where I have lived all of my life. I am a sophomore at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, where I have also studied my entire life. One of the many things that I love about this city is the wide range of cultures and diversity of our neighborhoods. There are so many different areas of the city, each with their own unique vibe, culture, and background. Although there are many challenges that Chicago faces, the one I am most passionate about is the lack of gun control and the alarming level of gang violence that plagues the city, particularly in impoverished areas. During my time on the Honeycomb Leadership Council, I am most interested in encouraging social and political actions that would work to reduce the prevalence of gang violence in the city. I would also like the opportunity to improve my leadership, fundraising, writing, communication and research skills, as well as gain a deeper understanding of social-economic and racial issues that affect my city.
