Volunteer Spotlight

Martinez/Rooney Family

Gabrielle, Fergus, and their two daughters, Sophia, 15, and Lucia, 9, joined us for a beach cleanup in the Spring of 2012 and were instantly hooked on Honeycomb. Gabrielle and Fergus were so passionate about the work we do at Honeycomb that they joined our Board of Directors in 2013.

Every member of the Rooney/Martinez family is actively involved in our community. Gabrielle and Fergus are the co-founders of agencyEA, which has executed large-scale events for notable clients including The Oprah Winfrey Show and the Obama Administration. Sophia participates in a Community Connections program at her school, where this past year she worked with Friends of the Chicago River and Climate Cycle. Lucia’s favorite charity is PAWS and often raises funds for their organization by selling lemonade or rainbow loom bracelets in the neighborhood.

Volunteering comes naturally to Gabrielle. When she was in high school and in college, she worked with families in underserved neighborhoods as a tutor and a mentor. Her desire to make a difference continued after graduation, but a hectic work schedule and having a family made it difficult to find the time to volunteer – until she got connected with The Honeycomb Project. The opportunity to volunteer in her community, while showing her own kids how and why it is important to serve others, fit her needs perfectly.

“The experiences Honeycomb crafts and curates allow for powerful quality time with my children and husband,” she said. Her personal favorite project was at the Lincoln Park Shelter, where the whole family worked together to make breakfast for the shelter residents. “Whenever we can steal time away from our hectic schedules to not only serve the community in some way but also share something meaningful together is a gift.”
