Get Inspired: Clean Streets

Support our community members on the frontlines. Today, take some time to think about all the people who help deliver your mail and packages, remove garbage, and keep your neighborhood safe. Check out this StoryCorps interview to hear about how two garbagemen created an inspiring community along their New York City garbage route.

Angelo and Eddie worked in the West Village for over 30 years keeping the streets and sidewalks clean. On the day Angelo retired, the neighborhood came out to show their support for all he did to create community along his route. People like Angelo are on the frontlines working in grocery stores, driving public transit, and delivering mail, keeping our communities safe and connected. It's up to us to show community support and gratitude for all they do for our city and beyond.

This video was produced by StoryCorps, an audio recording organization dedicated to preserving and sharing humanity's stories in order build connections between people and create a more just and compassionate world. We love their inspiring work!

Let’s Talk

After watching Clean Streets, use the questions below to kick-start a great conversation with your family:

  • What stood out to you about Angelo and Eddie's story? What made you smile?

  • Did Angelo and Eddie remind you of anyone? What parts of this story could you relate to?

  • What is your favorite way to be thanked? Is it with a hug? A kind act? A thank you letter?

  • Bonus! Ask people in your family their favorite way to be thanked? Keep that in mind the next time you show them your gratitude!

Do Something: Gratitude Phone-a-thon

Who are you grateful for? Take a moment to think about all the people in your life who are supporting you. Your teachers, grandparents, neighbors, friends and more! How do they show up for you? What can you do to show up for them?

Get out your phones, tablets, and zoom apps - it's time for a phonathon!

Today we invite you to call three people in your life who you are thankful for. Let them know why you appreciate them and how much they mean to you. Or recite a fun song or poem and leave a voice message! When you reach out to someone you are grateful for, you strengthen relationships and have the power to brighten someone's day. Everyone could use a little pick-me-up, so pick up the phone and give a someone you love a ring!

Community Connections: Show Support for Community Workers

Let's show our appreciation! Think about all of the people who work to help you have a happy, safe, and healthy home life. Grab some markers and cardstock -- we're writing gratitude notes. When you're done, tape or tuck your card in a place where your intended recipient will easily find it. Your expression of gratitude are sure to bring lots of smilies!

When you're done, hang your sign above your garbage can where your garbage collector will see, on your front porch for your mail person, or hanging from the front gate for people on their morning commute. Frontline workers are dedicated to supporting our communities for the long haul, and they need continued support from their neighbors while we all navigate difficult times.
