Get Inspired: The Historic Life of Timuel Black

Black History Month. Did you know that the origins of Black History Month has roots in Chicago? In the summer of 1915, Dr. Carter G. Woodson travelled from Washington D.C. for the State of Illinois sponsored celebration of the 50th anniversary of emancipation. Only three years later, one of the most important Chicago civil rights activists would be born and go on to witness Woodson’s Negro History Week become America’s Black History Month, and his lifelong fight for racial justice would echo through generations.

In this interview with Chicago WGN’s Micah Materre, famed historian Tim Black reflects on a life of service, and fighting for equality in the military, in the classroom, and in the segregated communities of his beloved city. Listen to the centenarian’s perspective on how our country has evolved, and what work is yet to be done.

Although we lost Mr. Black in October of 2021, his dedication to civil rights, education, and the City of Chicago will be remembered for generations to come.

Let’s Talk

After watching the WGN interview, use the questions below to kick-start a great conversation with your family:

  • Did you learn something new about Timuel Black or the civil rights movement? What do you want to learn more about?

  • Why is hearing stories from people like Mr. Black so important? How can you help amplify the voices of others?

  • Would you consider yourself to be a good listener? When is it hard for you to listen to others? What could you do to improve?

  • Bonus! Practice using your voice and listening skills. Share something that you care about with a friend or family member and then switch roles! Practice listening and repeating their words as they do yours.

Do Something: Chicago’s Black History Month Honorees

Let's dive deep! Timuel Black is not the only notable Black figure in Chicago’s fight for civil rights. Each year, the City of Chicago honors those who have paved the way for equality. The selection committee is careful to note “Creating a list of notable Black Chicagoans was an impossible task. It is clear that the number of deserving names is beyond counting, and the excitement of selecting names is countered by regrets in those who were not included.” The list features an eclectic group of accomplished leaders, some well-known, and others that history has unfairly forgotten. To celebrate Black History Month, join us in recognizing them and celebrating their achievements.

Explore Chicago’s Black History Month honorees and find a Chicagoan that you want to learn more about. What interests you about them? Why do you think their story isn’t widely known? Bonus: Find out more about a Chicagoan not on this list! Share your research with your family and friends.
