Get Inspired: The Radical Monarchs

Social Justice. Youth activists are paving the way to create just communities for all. Today, we're inviting your family to think about the ways in which you show up for social justice every day. Check out this video about a troop of young girls of color who are standing up for change.

Honeycomb kids, like the Radical Monarchs, are our next generation of changemakers. Today, and every day, it's important for us to stand up for what we believe in, educate ourselves, and work to make positive change in our communities.

Let’s Talk

After watching the video about the Radical Monarchs use the questions below to kick-start a great conversation with your family:

  • What inspired you about the work of the Radical Monarchs? What was unique about their story?

  • Do you feel like your voice is heard? Why or why not?

  • What causes are important to you? What positive changes do you hope to make in your community?

  • Bonus! Do some research about a social justice issue you are passionate about. Make a mini presentation and teach your family what you learned.

Do Something: Signs of Change

Let's get creative! Protest signs have been used for decades as symbols of freedom of speech in the fight against racism and injustice. These signs share peoples passions, bring attention to important issues, and remind us that we are part of a larger community.

Grab your art supplies! Find a poster board or piece of cardboard and let’s make art. Protest art comes in all different shapes and sizes. Create an image of a world you want to see, or decorate a protest slogan on your sign. Get creative with your art! Why are these issues important to you?

Hang your sign in your window or save it for the next time you want your voice to be heard. Don’t forget to save your signs. Your artwork and voice are a piece of history that’s important to preserve.

Community Connections: Youth Voice in Policy

Democracy is meant to represent us all. Just because voting starts at 18, doesn’t mean that youth can’t make a difference in the policies and programs enacted in our communities. Your voice is a vital part of making policies that support and strengthen our communities for generations to come.

If you see something, say something! What issues in your neighborhood are you passionate about? Contact your local alderman, mayor, or Representative and ask them how they are incorporating youth voice into their policymaking decisions. Send them an email or give them a call. You can share the tips linked below from Youth Service America on how policymakers can highlight youth voices in local government.
