Sorensen Family
“I was reflecting on the impact of service my mom and dad had on me as a youth,” says Jeff Sorensen, “and I knew as a parent myself, that I wanted to instill the same values of giving back.”
Jeff knew that he wanted to continue his mom’s focus of volunteering with his own family, after she passed away. It was 2020 when Jeff and his wife, Nicole, along with their two children were introduced to The Honeycomb Project.
Jeff and Nicole first took Emme (age nine) and Theo (age seven) grocery shopping for Honeycomb families who had limited resources. After the family dropped off the groceries outside one particular family’s doorstop, they saw kids come outside for the items.
“It was during Covid when we had limited interaction with others,” recalls Jeff. “As we drove away, Emme and Theo saw the other family come outside to grab thegroceries...the kids made an immediate connection of how similar we all are. Theo talked about it all the time during the pandemic and kept asking to do it again.”
It was through his work at PwC that Jeff found Honeycomb. “I wanted to give back more than in a normal Board governance capacity,” he says. “I had a list of organizations through my corporation and Honeycomb was my number one choice…there was an instant connection.”
Jeff officially joined the Honeycomb Board the same year after he started to volunteer and is involved in several capacities—personally and professionally through PwC. “My family loves Honeycomb,” says Jeff. “We sit down together and pick out the next activity…we try new events and especially love attending outdoor projects.”
Jeff and Nicole appreciate how easy Honeycomb makes it to volunteer. “Life’s hard…we don’t need another task with busy lives…but this is easy. Honeycomb makes it easy to give back and make a difference.”
From food pantries and animal shelters, to the Love Fridge, Sew Crafty Studio and more — the Sorensen’s explore the greater Chicago area. “Honeycomb helps such a diverse network of communities,” Jeff continues, “the breathe and depth of Honeycomb’s impact is amazing.”
Outside of Honeycomb, the Sorensen family keeps busy. Jeff is a partner at PwC and Nicole works in brand management. Emme loves soccer and spending time with her friends. Theo loves Legos and listens to music all day, every day. The family lives in Wilmette and enjoys board game nights, building Legos together and watching sports.
