Anderson Family

“It’s a great way to connect with others and learn more about yourself.”

Nick and Sarah Anderson were first introduced to The Honeycomb Project at The Chicago Volunteer Expo a few years back. Nick and Sarah co-founded The Expo in 2013 to showcase the civic engagement opportunities available across Chicago. The annual event has grown to include more than 100 non-profit organizations and was attended by over 4,000 people in 2017.

When their daughter, Olivia, was born 3 years ago, Nick and Sarah wanted to ensure that volunteering was a part of Olivia’s upbringing right from the start because “it’s a great way to connect with others and learn more about yourself.” They also wanted to stay active in volunteering without taking away family time. Honeycomb enables the Anderson’s to share their passion for volunteering together as a family.  

The Anderson family attended their first event this spring at Work in a Nature Preserve then approached us about training to become volunteer Project Leaders. They now lead our monthly project at Indian Road Woods along the Chicago River. Their favorite part of being Project Leaders is “seeing the collective impact families can have when they work together – from spreading a huge pile of mulch to removing invasive species.” In addition to leading Honeycomb events, Nick led a supply drive to collected more than 100 pounds of corks to make cat toys for our projects at The Anti-Cruelty Society. 

The Anderson Family live in Lincoln Square. Outside of attending Honeycomb projects, the family keeps busy and spends their time enjoying the outdoors with their daughter and exploring their new neighborhood. Sarah is the Associate Director of Education at The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum and Nick is the Hospital Administrator at Animal Medical Center of Chicago. Olivia is 3 years old and has been enjoying her time making new friends every month at Indian Road Woods.
